Carihuairazo Climb
Carihuairazo (5018 m / 16463 ft) is the second volcano in the Chimborazo Reserve. Compared to its "big brother," Chimborazo, it may not impress at first sight, but in fact, this mountain is an excellent option to prepare for the summit attempt of Ecuador's highest peak. It allows you to achieve better acclimatization and practice basic climbing skills on its small glacier.

This summit trail starts at beautiful paramo highlands where you can spot vicuñas and enjoy great views of Chimborazo.

Itinerary
Day 1 Mechahuasca Refuge (L, D)
Pickup from your accommodation at 11.30 a.m. After the gear check you will have a private transfer to Mechahuasca, with a stop on the way for lunch.
Arrival at the community run mountain refuge (4200 m). In the afternoon, you can take a short optional hike to look for vicuñas and enjoy the impressive views of Carihuairazo and Chimborazo.
Briefing, dinner and rest.
Day 2 Summit Climb (S, B)
We prepare to start the climb at 2.30 a.m. The approach to the glacier takes 2 – 3 hours, on a gradually climbing trail traversing paramo grasslands. At about 4750 m altitude we get ready for the final technical ascent, which includes some steep and rocky parts.
Descent to the refuge for breakfast and transfer back.
