If you're someone who enjoys physical activity and doesn't want to break your exercise routine while traveling through Ecuador, you should try this tour that combines hiking and biking on Chimborazo Volcano (6,268 m).
The tour offers an epic adventure on the slopes of Ecuador’s highest point and the closest spot to the sun. This journey combines a challenging hike with an exciting bike descent. The adventure begins with a hike from the first refuge, "Hermanos Carrel," located at 4,850 meters above sea level, up to the second refuge, "Edward Whymper," at 5,000 meters. From there, the bike descent begins, taking you through stunning landscapes such as glaciers, rocky formations, and arid plains.
We’ll start our day in a private van, driving to Chimborazo, which stands at 6,268 meters above sea level.
Once there, our trek will take us through varied terrain, from lush mountain vegetation to a dry and rocky desert.
Our starting point will be the "Hermanos Carrel" refuge, located at 4,800 meters, named after the British mountaineer who first conquered Chimborazo's summit in the 1800s.
"Edward Whymper" is the name of the second refuge, which we will reach after a 40-minute hike.
From there, we will climb to the Thilman Glacier at 5,000 meters to explore the frozen rocks and marvel at the panoramic view surrounding us.
Upon our return to the "Hermanos Carrel" refuge, we will set off on our bikes to begin the second part of the tour.
As we descend along the mountain roads, be sure to take in the scenery as we head toward the village of San Juan or Riobamba.
On the way back to Baños, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, particularly alpacas and vicuñas that roam freely in the surrounding lands.
